Mark Risse joined the Institute of Government as the Georgia Power Professor of Water
Policy in 2009. As such, he provides local and state leaders with technical assistance
and advice related to water resource management issues. He has worked in the Department
of Biological and Agricultural Engineering with the UGA Cooperative Extension since
1994.
Dr. Risse’s expertise lies in the areas of non-point source pollution management,
soil and water conservation, stormwater management and erosion control, and animal
waste and nutrient management. He is involved with several aspects of the state water
planning process with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and he serves on
several state committees focused on the oversight of septic systems, stormwater management,
and erosion and sediment control. He also coordinates water resource and agricultural
pollution prevention programs for the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Dr. Risse earned his Ph.D. in biological and agricultural engineering from Purdue
University and his M.S. and B.S. degrees in agricultural engineering from the University
of Georgia. His recent research projects have related to evaluation of technology
for stormwater management and erosion control and implementation of low impact development
technologies.
