UGA Defense Community Resilience Program

About Our Work

The Defense Community Resilience Program helps communities and military installations explore mutually beneficial opportunities for economic growth. A recent example is the River Valley Community Compatible Development Plan, which provides a regional roadmap for creating vibrant downtowns, investing in infrastructure and promoting outdoor activities in the rural communities surrounding Fort Moore.

The Challenge

Military installation and defense communities face a wide variety of threats that are shaped by:

The Approach

This long-term engagement between UGA faculty and staff embedded at the community/installation level:

  • Brings together civilian and military personnel
  • Builds on local knowledge and experience
  • Leverages the local environmental context and supports natural systems
  • Supports military and civilian priorities for resilience and future development

Therefore, in order to reduce the local vulnerability, the DCRP establishes ongoing long-term engagements with installations and communities to tailor solutions to the individual context in response to the local knowledge of the military and civilian personnel on site.

The Outcome

This effort will draw upon a collaborative network of professionals to build adaptive capacity, apply practical research, and catalyze innovative projects to build resilience across the spectrum of interconnected military and civilian interests and responsibilities.
